Power is Out

Rain + Freezing temps are a bad combination. We were without power for a few days, but many folks were without power for several weeks. Here's a few shots of what our street looked like right after the storm.

History was made last night

Kids, last night, November 5, 2008 was an historic night in our nation's history. Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States and is the first African American to hold this office. To give you a sense of how incredible Obama's election is, let me put this in perspective:

In 1963, Daddy was Amelia's age (2) and in many parts of the southern U.S., black people rode at the back of the bus, sat in black only sections at the theatre, and were restricted from staying at certain hotels or attending certain public colleges and universities. The Governor of Alabama, George Wallace, actually stood in the doorway of the Admin building at the University of Alabama to block the entrance of black students.

In August of that year, the March on Washington took place, culminating with the historic Martin Luther King speech "I have a Dream". Just a month later, four young girls were killed in a car bomb explosion while attending Sunday Services in Birmingham Alabama.

In 1964 The Civil Rights Act was passed outlawing racial segregation in schools, public places and employment.

Now in 2008, 44 years after this landmark legislation passed, the United States elected it's first African-American President.

From "White's Only" water fountains to the White House - a remarkable and long overdue change in how this country views race.

Very cool indeed!

Camping Out at the Montshire Museum

The "Sun" Indeed
Cameron and Dad spent the night at the Montshire Museum in Norwich, Vermont, with about 80 other Cub Scouts and their Dads. The Montshire is an awesome science museum and super kid friendly with indoor and outdoor exhibits. We camped out in the great room and Cameron got to run around the museum in his pajamas this morning which I'm told was a "blast".

Amelia's First Sutures

Dad travelled to San Jose this week, while Amelia traveled to the Emergency Room for 6 sutures to her lower lip. The crack Macdonald accident reconstruction team believes the lacerated / bit through lip was a result of a header, into the edge of the train table in the play room. Unfortunately, Mom was home alone and had to deal with the ensuing mess. By all accounts, it wasn't pretty. The good news is Amelia is healing nicely and is back to her usual feisty self. Whether the train table ends up on the curb on trash day remains to be determined.
